Greg Cote’s NFL Passer Rankings: Week 2
The Falcons’ Matt Ryan is out the starting gate fastest with a 55.40-point week as the Miami Herald launches its 17th season of Passer Success System (PASS) quarterback rankings. Defending champion Peyton Manning of Denver debuts at No. 7 with 35.45 points. The Dolphins’ Ryan Tannehill opens 25th with 20.90 points. The Herald rankings use a simple formula unchanged since its inception in 1998, factoring accuracy, yardage, TD/interception ratio and team result. These are passer rankings and do not weigh a QB’s running ability. Most rating systems including the NFL’s and ESPN’s are complicated and percentile based, allowing players who miss half a season to still win a title. Our rankings are cumulative, placing a premium on passers who are consistently productive and avoid injury or benching. Watch for our Top 20 in this space every week:
