Bull Market: Epic QB duel boosts Flowers in Herald’s state offensive player of year race
Though unbeaten UCF beat South Florida 49-42, Bulls quarterback Quinton Flowers outdueled Knights counterpart McKenzie Milton to grow what now seems an insurmountable lead in the Herald’s 2017 State Offensive Player of the Year race.
Flowers, Miami-born and from Jackson High, had a season-best 383.5-point game to Milton’s 272.5. Both are comfortably ahead third-place Malik Rosier of the Hurricanes.
Our weekly rankings measure the most productive quarterbacks, running backs and receivers from the state’s seven FBS teams: Miami, Florida, Florida State, FIU, FAU, UCF and South Florida.
The rankings are cumulative but based weekly on average points per game: Total points divided by number of games a player’s team has played.
This keeps the comparison even because not all teams have played the same number of games at the same time. Our simple formula awards a half-point for every passing yard and one point for every rushing or receiving yard, with six points for every TD scored or thrown. The SOPY race continues all season — through this week’s conference-championship games and the bowl games that follow.
