1. HEAT

Trade deadline passes quietly as games resume: Heat had won 15 of past 17 games entering Saturday, still chasing that final playoff spot. Meanwhile, Miami made no moves before the NBA trade deadline. “I’m glad we didn’t do anything stupid,” Pat Riley said. Low bar, but OK!

2. PANTHERS

Cats cool down at home, still chasing eighth seed: Florida followed a 5-0 road trip by losing two in a row at home entering Sunday’s visit by Ottawa and is still two points off playoff pace. Some climbing yet to go to have any shot at that bodacious preseason Stanley Cup talk.

3. HURRICANES

UM men host Duke as postseason nears: Canes men hosted No. 10 Blue Devils on Saturday, now No. 17 UM women end regular season vs. Georgia Tech on Sunday. With ACC tourneys looming, there’ll be no NIT-picking this year. NCAA invites should await both UM teams.

4. MARLINS

Spring is sprung for real as fake games begin: Marlins’ first of 35 spring-training games was Saturday vs. Cardinals at the site they share in Jupiter. Thirty-five practice games! Then 162. Then a month of playoffs. Season too long? Naaaaah, what makes you say that!?

5. NASCAR

Daytona 500 kicks off season Sunday: What ends at Homestead in November begins Sunday at Daytona with Chase Elliott on the pole. Although 5-spot could as easily have gone to Sunday finishes for Honda Classic golf, UM-Gators baseball or Delray Beach Open tennis.
