Dolphins name No. 2 quarterback, sign Chosen, offer injury updates and name captains

The Dolphins named Mike White their No. 2 quarterback on Monday and re-signed receiver Robbie Chosen, this time to their practice squad.

Defensive lineman Randy Charlton was released from the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Chosen gives the Dolphins a seventh veteran wide receiver, besides the six on the 53-man roster (Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Braxton Berrios, Cedrick Wilson Jr., Erik Ezukanma and River Cracraft). Under NFL practice squad rules, Chosen can be used in three games this season while remaining on the practice squad.

Raleigh Webb and Braylon Sanders are the only other receivers on the practice squad.

In other news Monday, McDaniel said the No. 2 quarterback job was “a tough decision” between White and Skylar Thompson. White was the Jets’ backup quarterback last season and agreed to terms with the Dolphins during the first two hours of free agency in March.

“Mike White and Skylar Thompson competed all the way until the last rep,” McDaniel said, praising the “command [that White] exudes in the huddle” and how quickly he learned the offense. “We are relying on Mike White’s veteran experience,” McDaniel said.

In injury news, safety Brandon Jones, running back De’Von Achane and receiver Jaylen Waddle were ready to practice Monday, McDaniel said. All seem to be trending up for Sunday’s opener at the Chargers (4:25 p.m., CBS). Waddle, who has been dealing with a midsection injury, has said he expects to play on Sunday.

Jones didn’t play in preseason and the team handled him cautiously as he recovered from last October’s ACL injury.

Left tackle Terron Armstead, who is nursing a leg injury, was not ready to practice on Monday but is “progressing well,” McDaniel said. If Armstead cannot play on Sunday, Kendall Lamm likely would start.

Besides Armstead, two other Dolphins sat out practice: cornerback Justin Bethel and safety Elijah Campbell, who are both nursing leg injuries that weren’t serious enough to put them on injured reserve.

McDaniel declined to say if Isaiah Wynn will be the starting left guard; he started the final two games of preseason. Liam Eichenberg has been dealing with an injury.

Meanwhile, agent Drew Rosenhaus -- appearing on his weekly Sunday night segment on Fox-7 -- said Jeff Wilson Jr. should be ready to return from the injured list in the fifth game of the season. Wilson - who has injuries to his midsection and finger - must miss the first four games because he’s on injured reserve.

Guard Robert Jones, who is also on injured reserve, will miss four to six weeks, Rosenhaus said.

CAPTAINS NAMED

▪ Dolphins players voted for the same captains they had last year: Tua Tagovailoa, Armstead, Tyreek Hill, Xavien Howard, Jevon Holland and Christian Wilkins.

The only change: Alec Ingold is a captain for the first time. He replaces Elandon Roberts, who was a captain last year but now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

VAPE RESPONSE

McDaniel, asked about the Chargers’ social media schedule release showing an animated version of McDaniel vaping, said: “A lot of creative people doing creative things in 2023, which is pretty creative.”
