Quick hits from Mario Cristobal signing day Miami Hurricanes press conference
Quick hits from Mario Cristobal’s signing day press conference on Wednesday, on a day the Miami Hurricanes received commitments from defensive tackle Ahmad Moten, running back Trevonte Citizen and offensive linemen Matthew McCoy and Anez Cooper:
▪ He said Cooper is “one of the largest human beings you’ll ever see in your life” who can play guard or defensive tackle and “take over a game up front.” He projects as an offensive lineman for UM.
▪ He said McCoy has “enormous wingspan, plays with power. Going to be a great offensive tackle for us. Played tight end before, but he’ll never play that again. He’s an offensive lineman.”
▪ He said Citizen is an “everydown back” who “can run through you, around you, get the ball out of the backfield, can line up outside as a receiver. Explosive power, hard to tackle guy.”
▪ And Cristobal said of Moten: “I was trying to get him the other place I was at, thought I had him. Explosive player, lots of twitch. Can take on double teams, knock you back, inside but has also played outside. One of the best D tackles in the country. … Decided to stay home.”
▪ Cristobal said four-star defensive end/outside linebacker Cyrus Moss, who committed last month and enrolled early, is a “dynamic edge rusher, athlete. You’ll see him covering recovers, also rushing the passer.”
▪ He said new tight end Jaleel Skinner, who also committed last month and enrolled early, is “the best tight end in the country. We were able to get him on board after a very strenuous recruiting process, a late decommitment by him [from Alabama] to get him on board. A dynamic playmaker.”
▪ He said Antonio Moultrie, who was a defensive end at UAB, will play defensive tackle for UM... He said running back Henry Parrish, the transfer from Mississippi, “is a tough, physical runner.”... Receiver Frank Ladson, the Clemson transfer, “had some good moments at Clemson.”
▪ Cristobal is still looking for more roster help.
“On paper, you’re at scholarship close to the limit, felt that we probably have to address linebacker a little bit more,” Cristobal said. “I want to see how well we handle the line of scrimmage and the physicality that goes along with it. It looks like we have guys that can make plays. Wide receivers and DBs, really excited about them. I’m not sure how deep we are there.”
▪ Cristobal said he’s “fired up” about coordinator Kevin Steele’s hiring. “Next week we plan to have most of our hires, if not most of them,” he said, with offensive coordinator the biggest remaining opening.
