A look at the 2022 football recruits scheduled to take official visits to UM this weekend
In addition to holding its annual Paradise Camp for recruits Saturday, the Miami Hurricanes also will host at least a half dozen official visits from 2022 prospects.
Here’s who’s on tap for official visits:
▪ Jaleel Skinner: A week after four-star tight end RJ Maryland visited, another arrives on UM’s campus this weekend. But Skinner, who is rated by Rivals as the No. 3 tight end and the 109th-best prospect overall, appears less likely to end up at Miami than Maryland.
UM landed two elite tight ends in the same class before (Brevin Jordan, Will Mallory) and will try to do that again.
Skinner, who attends high school in Greer, South Carolina, has gone to UF, Arizona State and Alabama on official visits this month and to FSU on an unofficial visit. He said he was an FSU fan as a youngster and wants to take another visit there. He was on South Carolina’s campus this week.
He has not tipped his hand on a favorite.
▪ Demario Tolan: The four-star prospect from Dr. Phillips High in Orlando is rated by Rivals as the No. 15 outside linebacker and No. 167 prospect overall in 2022.
He has visited Tennessee and LSU and also taken an unofficial visit to FSU, Clemson and UF.
Rivals national recruiting coordinator Adam Gorney had said LSU, Tennessee, Auburn and UM are the front-runners, with Clemson, FSU and UF still in the mix.
Tolan told Gorney that UM’s appeal is that he could potentially play early in his career and that the Canes have developed NFL players.
One thing that helps LSU is Tolan’s relationship with linebacker coach Blake Baker, who was UM’s defensive coordinator the past two years.
He plans to announce July 8.
▪ Jacob Hood: The four-star prospect from Nashville — rated the No. 34 offensive tackle — has a top five of UM, Georgia, Mississippi, Mississippi State and Auburn.
He has visited Georgia and Auburn and wants to visit UF in July.
Hood, who can play left and right tackle, holds UM offensive line coach Garin Justice in high regard. The competition is formidable, but the Canes are at least in the mix.
He expects to make a decision by early September.
▪ Devon Jackson: The four-star prospect from Omaha, Nebraska — rated by Rivals as the No. 26 outside linebacker in the 2022 class — told the Sun Devils’ Rivals web site over the weekend that “Miami and Arizona State are really my top-two schools. I’m going to come for my official visit to Arizona State for the USC game. I can’t wait for that.”
Oklahoma also remains in the mix.
He holds UM assistant coach Jonathan Patke in high regard and is eager to spend time with Canes coaches this weekend and forge a relationship. That will go a long way in determining whether the Canes can overtake the Sun Devils.
“They say I’m one of the pieces they need to get back to where they want to be. Miami’s just one of those programs everyone knows about,” Jackson told Canesport. “You say you got the U, everyone knows what you’re talking about. So that’s cool.”
He said he wants to make a decision in August.
▪ Zane Durant: The four-star prospect from Orlando — rated by the Rivals as the No. 20 defensive end - is considering UM, Penn State, Indiana and UCF.
Mississippi, Tennessee and West Virginia aren’t entirely out of the picture, but Durant chose UM for his final June visit instead of those three schools.
He has developed a good relationship with Canes assistant coaches Jess Simpson and Travaris Robinson and likes how they told him how they envision him fitting into the defense.
At 6-2 and 261 pounds, he could end up at defensive tackle eventually.
▪ Offensive tackle Daughtry Richardson: The three-star prospect from Miami Central is rated by Rivals as the 43rd-best offensive tackle in the 2022 class.
And though has visited Arizona State, FSU and Kentucky, he indicated this will come down to UM and the Seminoles.
“I can really say that Miami has a lot of stuff Florida State doesn’t have. Florida State has a lot of stuff that Miami doesn’t have,” Richardson told 247 Sports. “It’s honestly 50-50, but both programs have different things and both programs have different cultures and different ways of doing different things. I can really say it’s 50-50 because they both do stuff differently.”
He plans to announce July 26.
Colleague David Wilson will have a story on Saturday’s Paradise Camp later today. More than two dozen prominent Canes alums will be on hand for the event, with Jon Beason, Edgerrin James, Antrel Rolle, Calais Campbell, Michael Irvin, Greg Rousseau, Jaelan Phillips among those committed.
