What can cause a $5,200 bicycle to be recalled? Wheels coming off and a broken back
Nobody expects one of the wheels to come off a $5,200 bike. That’s why Trek recalled its 2017, 2018 and 2019 Super Commuter+ 8S motorized bicycles.
The exact problem, as stated in Friday’s U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “The front fender bolt can unthread causing the wheel to detach from the bicycle, posing a fall hazard to the rider.”
As for how many times that’s happened, the notice says Trek, “has received two reports of the wrong bolt being installed to secure the front fender to the fork crown” and a broken back resulted in one of the incidents.
At $5,200 per bicycle, it’s no surprise Trek’s offering only a free inspection and repair at a Trek retailer. To find one, go to the Trek website or phone Trek at 800-373-4594, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Eastern time.
