Sue Bird looking at another golden opportunity with U.S. women’s basketball team at Rio Olympics

Sue Bird has never left an Olympic Games without a gold medal.

She doesn’t plan for this year to be any different.

With the women’s basketball semifinals starting Thursday, Team USA is just two wins away from earning its sixth consecutive gold medal and seventh in eight Olympic Games.

But her status for Thursday’s game was up in the air after she injured a knee in Tuesday’s win over Japan.

Bird, a former standout at UConn and a member of the WNBA’s Seattle Storm, was on the past three Olympics-winning teams and is one of nine women to win an Olympic gold medal, an NCAA championship and a WNBA championship.

She started all eight games for Team USA during its 2008 run, leading the team in steals.
