Patrick Mahomes’ old tweets surfaced. One about George Zimmerman’s acquittal is noticed
The importance of scrubbing your Twitter cannot be overstated.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently came under fire for old tweets that many believed to be in support of George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Feb. 2012.
Replying to a tweet that called the Zimmerman case “an absolute tragedy,” a then-17-year-old Mahomes wrote “No one knows what actually happens which is why he is not guilty but a crime could have occurred.”
In an earlier tweet, he wrote “Stop resisting or assaulting a cop.”
It’s important to note that these tweets occurred at separate times. The first appeared to be from 2013 while the second is from Dec. 2011.
Twitter, however, reacted as if they were posted yesterday, criticizing everyone from the biracial signal caller’s black father to his white girlfriend.
Mahomes will be the seventh black quarterback to start in the Super Bowl and could become only the third to win it.
The jury that acquitted Zimmerman concluded that he was not guilty of second-degree murder which is defined as “a non-premeditated killing.”
It’s unclear if the now 24-year-old Mahomes still feels this way. But labeling him a Zimmerman supporter might a bit harsh, especially considering another tweet from 2013.
In any case, it’s safe to say his first Super Bowl berth is not off to a great start.
