Super Bowl

You thought driving to the Super Bowl would be a nightmare? It’ll be worse. Here are detours

Thousands of football fans will soon arrive in Miami to lounge on the beach, drink beer at the bar — and clog the road during Super Bowl week.

Can you blame them?

Miami knows how to party.

A list of Super Bowl-themed parties and events are popping up across South Florida in the days leading up to the big game, including Super Bowl Live, a free and family event at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami, and the Super Bowl Experience, an interactive pro football theme park at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

There are VIP-exclusive bashes, too.

But you can’t party — or even get to work — if you’re stuck in gridlock.

Whether you’re trying to enjoy the Super Bowl experience or want to escape it, here are the road closings and detours you need to know.

Miami Gardens

Getting to the Hard Rock Stadium to watch the game may become one of Miami’s greatest traffic challenges. Get ready with relaxing music and headache medicine as several key roadways will be closed.

All northbound traffic at the Golden Glades interchange will be blocked off. The 2X exit of the southbound Turnpike will also be closed.

On the street level, roads experiencing closures will be Northbound Northwest 27th Avenue at NW 191 Street; Northwest 199th Street at NW 14th Court; Eastbound Northwest 199th Street at Northwest 27th Avenue; and Northbound Northwest 27th Ave at Northwest 199th Street.

Detours:

When you get close to the stadium, turn off your GPS and follow these instructions.

If you’re heading in from Fort Lauderdale (north):

Take I-595 West,

Use the second from the right lane exit 8-9A-9B for Florida’s Turnpike

Turn right towards South Turnpike/Homestead

Keep right to Exit 47, follow signs for FL-817/NW 27th Ave./University Dr.

Turn right onto FL-817 S/NW 27th Ave./University Commerce Court

Turn left onto Northwest 203rd Street

Turn left into Snake Creek Lot

If you’re heading in from Miami (south):

Take I-95 North

Use the left two lanes for exit 12A for FL-826 W/Florida’s Turnpike

Take the Northwest 27th Avenue/FL-817 exit

Merge onto Northwest 167th Street/Golden Glades Drive

Turn right onto Northwest 27th Avenue

Turn right onto Northwest 203rd Street

Follow signs into Snake Creek Lot

Downtown Miami

Expect to see road closures along Biscayne Boulevard, the main artery through downtown Miami, during Super Bowl week. The shutdowns will be near Bayfront Park and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

Traffic on Biscayne Boulevard near Bayfront Park, 301 Biscayne Blvd., will be affected from Jan. 25 through Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 2. The park will be hosting Super Bowl Live, a weeklong family-friendly festival of free football-themed activities.

Traffic in the area by the Adrienne Arsht Center, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., will be affected starting Jan. 31 in the evening through Super Bowl Sunday.

How bad could traffic get?

You might see rush-hour-like delays most of the week because of the event’s hours, except for Wednesday, Jan. 29, the only day the event is not open.

City government officials have taken measures to try to minimize traffic snarls. The city has placed a moratorium on all lane closures at construction sites until 11:59 p.m. Feb. 9 in the heart of Miami’s urban core and inside a large perimeter in Little Havana around Marlins Park. Construction equipment and materials should not be in the roadway, and sidewalks should be restored.

Detours:

By Jan. 29, drivers traveling north and south on Biscayne will be rerouted to Northeast Second Avenue.

Drivers traveling north by the Adrienne Arsht Center will be redirected to Northeast First Avenue. Organizers say the Interstate 395 ramp by the center will remain open.

If you are attending Super Bowl Live:

Jan. 25-Jan. 28 Use the entrance on Northeast Third Street and Biscayne Boulevard or the entrance on Southeast First Street and Biscayne Boulevard.

Jan. 30-Feb. 1 — Use the entrance on Northeast Third Street and Biscayne Boulevard, Southeast First Street and Biscayne Boulevard, or Flagler Street and Biscayne Boulevard.

Bayfront Park will be hosting “Super Bowl Live,” a weeklong festival of free, family-friendly football-themed activities from Jan. 25 to Feb. 1.

Miami Beach

Road closures have already been set up around the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Dr., with more expected as Super Bowl Sunday nears. The center will be hosting the Super Bowl Experience, an interactive pro football theme park from Jan. 25-26 and Jan. 29-Feb. 1.

Drivers should expect to see heavy congestion in the area except for Jan. 27-28 when the event is closed.

It’s not the only area of the Beach that will see shutdowns.

Drivers shouldn’t plan to cruise along Ocean Drive. The popular tourist area will be pedestrian-only from 7 a.m. Jan. 31 until 7 a.m. Feb. 3.

Watson Island, which is connected to the mainland and South Beach by the MacArthur Causeway, will also have a series of events from Jan. 30-Feb. 1, according to the city. Drivers who don’t want to face heavy congestion should use the Julia Tuttle or Venetian causeways to enter or exit the city during this time.

To help keep traffic flowing, Miami Beach officials also placed a moratorium on lane closures for construction work. Traffic lanes and sidewalks are not supposed to be closed on account of construction on private property south for 41st Street, except for work related to city projects.

Here are the other closures you need to know about:

Full road closures on Convention Center Drive

18th Street to Dade Boulevard — Jan. 18-Feb. 5

17th Street to 18th Street — Jan. 24-Feb. 1.

Washington Avenue southbound from 18th Street to 21st Street — Jan. 21-Feb. 4

Washington Avenue northbound from 18 Street to 21 Street — Jan. 25-Feb. 3

19th Street will also be closed for traffic, but the parking lot will remain accessible from Jan. 18-Feb. 5.

Drivers should expect to find road closures near the Miami Beach Convention Center through Super Bowl Sunday.

Other closures:

Streets around the Faena Forum, including 34th Street from Indian Creek Drive to Collins Avenue — Jan. 25-Feb. 3

33rd Street westbound from Indian Creek Drive to Collins Avenue — Jan. 29-Feb. 2

32nd Street from Indian Creek Drive to Collins Avenue — Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

Detours:

Traffic on Convention Center Drive and Washington Avenue will be redirected to Meridian Avenue Jan. 29-Feb. 2.

If you’re attending the Super Bowl Experience:

Unlike Super Bowl Live, you do have to buy tickets. Miami Beach residents can save 15% off admission if the tickets are purchased at the Convention Center’s Box Office, according to the city.

The box office is in the Ocean Drive Ballroom at the northwest corner of Convention Center Drive. You will have to show proof of residency such as your driver’s license to get the discount.

At least there’s some perk to the influx of traffic congestion locals can expect to see through Super Bowl Sunday.
