Dolphins vs. Ravens: Who won the key matchups?

Dolphins defensive line vs. ravens offensive line

Who won: Dolphins

Impact: The Dolphins stoned the Ravens on the 2-yard line, stopping Javorius Allen on third down and a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-inches. Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips batted a Matt Schaub pass that Reshad Jones intercepted. The Dolphins hit Devante Parker to open the scoring the next play. Twenty seconds later, defensive end Derrick Shelby blocked — then intercepted — a Schaub pass and kept on truckin’ to the end zone. Olivier Vernon’s 2.5 sacks highlighted a pass rush that almost knocked Schaub out of the game when it wasn’t making him just ineffective.

Dolphins special teams vs. ravens special teams

Who won: Dolphins

Impact: The Dolphins get the edge because the Ravens made the bigger mistakes. Take the Dolphins’ second extra point. Andrew Franks blew it, but the Ravens were offsides. Extra point No. 2 got blocked and returned for two points, but the Ravens were offsides again. So, the Dolphins, within a sneeze of the goal line, went for two and got it. Baltimore’s streak of five games with a blocked punt or kick ended. Ravens kicker Justin Tucker went 2 for 3. His lone miss: the potential winning 55-yarder. Considering the field conditions, blame that on Baltimore calling plays as if setting up a chip shot.

Dolphins WR Parker vs. ravens secondary

Who won: Dolphins

Impact: On the numbers, this is a draw. Parker was targeted five times, and caught three for 68 yards and a touchdown. But two of those catches were the game’s most important. Parker’s 38-yard touchdown saw him soar above single coverage to pluck a high deep ball from the clouds and give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead. The second huge catch didn’t lead to points, just the win. Parker’s 14-yard catch on a cut over the middle converted a third-and-7 from the Dolphins 48. This allowed the locals to drain almost another two minutes off the clock. The Ravens got the ball with 20 seconds left at their own 20. Game.
