Rap legend Rick Ross talks Dolphins schedule release, new QB and coach
Rick Ross’ life screams luxury.
Whether it’s the lush voice of the woman whispering “Maybach Music” on all of his tracks or how he’s celebrating two decades of “Port of Miami” with a multi-city tour that will feature not only an orchestra but a choir. Or even the way that he eases out of his Miami Beach pool – the very one that recently featured in the Architectural Digest – just to do this interview.
And while most of the world wants to know about his fractured relationship with Drake, it’s his connection to the Miami Dolphins that recently made headlines — specifically if, or when, he’ll join the franchise’s ownership group.
“I don’t have that answer,” Ross said, flashing a sly grin. “But I’m an optimistic Miamian. I’m an optimistic Dolfan. I’m an optimistic entrepreneur. I’m an optimistic young guy that grew up five blocks away from that same stadium.
“So when I’m speaking of possibly being a minority owner one day, that’s me being optimistic. Am I my serious? Extremely serious. And if the opportunity presents itself, man, it’ll be a blessing.”
Ross wouldn’t be a stranger to the office. The Carol City artist recently starred in the Dolphins’ schedule release video. It was creative play on the rap impresario’s stage name, one that he shares with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.
“We’ve been in contact and the idea presented itself, and I was like ‘That’s really too easy!’” Ross said. “Let me put the call to the big boss Stephen Ross and let me go sit in the office and then meet a few players and make sure the streets and the community connected to the Dolphins.”
The opportunity gave him an up close and personal view into some of the Dolphins’ new faces. Although it’s clear that the Dolphins find themselves in the midst of a rebuild, the team appeared really focus.
“You could really see the dedication,” Ross said. “Everybody understands the assignment. We rebuilding – and we rebuilding in a big way. We had an amazing, exciting last few seasons, but you know, they just ain’t turned out the way we needed them too. So it was time to rebuild and, um, myself and the city supportive of the moves they made.”
Added Ross: “We know it’s going to be a grind, but this is a great beginning to a new start.”
On Malik Willis, Ross was impressed with the quarterback’s demeanor.
“He’s a really focused quarterback,” Ross said before quipping that he’d be “totally surprised if I bumped into him at Club LIV.
“The focus is there,” Ross continued. “I’m excited.”
The same goes for coach Jeff Hafley.
“He just felt like a football guy,” Ross said. “He’s a real football guy and the guys respect him. That’s what we needed as a head coach. It’s got to be somebody that the team, the staff, the staff – everybody respects.”
Regardless of how Ross feels about the team, odds are the first season under Hafley and co. won’t be all sunshine and rainbows. The Dolphins already have one of the most difficult schedules in 2026, not mention the loss of talent that occurred over the offseason. Still, the fact that both Hafley and Willis got an endorsement from one of the Dolphins’ biggest fans bodes well for the future.
