Dolphins’ 2027 draft pick inventory grows. And Coleman reaction, contract news

The Dolphins have quietly added another draft pick for 2027, giving them at least eight picks and potentially nine.

According to a league source, conditions were met on the 2027 conditional seventh-round pick that Miami was due to receive from the Giants in the Darren Waller trade that sent a 2026 Dolphins sixth-round pick to New York.

So Miami, in the 2027 draft, will have its own first-, second-, third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-round picks. It also will have a fifth-rounder from Pittsburgh as part of the Jalen Ramsey trade and the seventh-rounder from the Giants from the Waller trade.

Also, overthecap.com projects that the Dolphins could pick up a seventh-round compensatory pick, though that’s uncertain.

The Dolphins’ own seventh-rounder in 2027 was traded to the Steelers in the Ramsey/Minkah Fitzpatrick/Jonnu Smith deal.

Miami had 13 picks in last month’s draft. The picks are a priority to the new Dolphins regime; general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has said Miami will be a “draft-and-develop” team.

Waller, incidentally, remains an unsigned free agent.

Coleman feedback

The Dolphins say they believe Missouri slot receiver Kevin Coleman also can play on the outside. But he seems most likely to thrive in the slot; his competition with Malik Washington should be spirited.

“Coleman has the speed to create opportunities on slot fades and skinny posts downfield,” NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein said. “His route running has room for improvement, but it’s average for a draftable prospect. While he lacks ideal size, he has adequate hands and toughness in traffic. His ability to handle utility plays and return punts will add a dimension to his game, provided he becomes a more well-rounded target from the slot.”

Coleman had 66 receptions for 732 yards and one touchdown last season. He played at Jackson State, Louisville and Mississippi State before his one year at Missouri.

He played 87% of his snaps in the slot.

“You’ve just got to get the ball in his hands; after that, he’s a nightmare,” ESPN’s Louis Riddick said. “He can track the ball, has a quick change of direction and then turns on the afterburners. Look at his open-field running skills. Miami will be very happy when they get Coleman on the field.”

This and that

Of the 66 players on the Dolphins roster (not counting the 13 draft picks who haven’t yet signed or the 10 undrafted rookies who will sign in the next day or two), only 15 are due any guaranteed money this season, according to overthecap.com.

That’s beneficial, because it will allow genuine competition without finances impacting decisions.

Of the two dozen free agents signed by Miami in March, the only ones due any guaranteed money moving forward are Malik Willis ($45 million, including a signing bonus), tight end Greg Dulcich ($1.5 million), receivers Jalen Tolbert ($1.1 million) and Tutu Atwell ($1.1 million), cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. ($1.1 million), defensive lineman Josh Uche ($1.1 million), safety Zayne Anderson ($565,000), linebacker Willie Gay Jr. ($500,000) and punter Bradley Pinion ($1.1 million).

Several others received modest signing bonuses, but that money has been paid.

▪ Second-year defensive lineman Kenneth Grant is changing his jersey number from 90 back to the 78 he wore at Michigan.
