Dolphins add a second rookie QB, poaching player endorsed by Tom Brady

The Dolphins shook up their quarterback room for the second time in four weeks on Thursday, poaching former North Dakota State standout Cam Miller from the Raiders’ practice squad.

Miller, a rookie sixth-round pick, is joining the Dolphins’ 53-man roster. A corresponding move was not immediately announced.

“He showed great anticipation, toughness, conviction, really good understanding of the offense” at North Dakota State, offensive coordinator Frank Smith said. “He had really good timing and rhythm. He was a guy coming out of the draft we really liked.”

He’s not expected to be active on Sunday. Quinn Ewers will start his third game on Sunday at New England (4:25 p.m., WSVN 7), and Zach Wilson is expected to remain the backup.

Smith said the thinking was to get Miller in the Dolphins building for the offseason.

Tom Brady, as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, endorsed Miller before the draft, praising his throwing technique and potential.

Miller, selected in the sixth round (215th overall) in this past April’s draft, has spent the season on Las Vegas’ practice squad after the Raiders opted to keep three other quarterbacks on their 53-man roster this season (Geno Smith, Kenny Pickett and Aiden O’Connell).

Miller, 6-1, threw 81 touchdowns and 19 interceptions and completed 69.3% of his passes in four years at North Dakota State (2021 through 2024) while going 45-11. He also ran for 2,277 yards on 4.3 per carry.

In his final season in college (2024), Miller started all 16 of NDSU’s games and completed 258 of 351 pass attempts for 3,251 yards with 33 touchdown pass and 4 interceptions, along with 631 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns

A native of Solon, Iowa, Miller was a first-team all FCS All American in 2024 and led North Dakota State to two FCS titles, winning the MVP award in the 2024 championship.

Miller set the North Dakota State program record for most completions and passing yards in a single season, passing Carson Wentz’s record set back in 2014.

Here’s how NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein evaluated Miller in the 2024 Draft:

“Miller is a four-year starter with average size and a history of winning games. He can read defenses but isn’t going to wear them out with his decision-making. He lacks ideal anticipation and drive velocity into intermediate pockets of the defense and has instances on tape where he appears too hesitant to cut throws loose to open targets. Miller’s mobility works in his favor, but he fails to stand out enough to project NFL success.”

Zierlein listed these as his strengths: “Quickly gets through his throwing operation and into release.... Better than 4:1 career touchdown-to-interception ratio…. Able to make touch throws to all three levels….

“Extends plays and buys time to make throws off-schedule…. Uses legs as a weapon on designed runs and as a scrambler.

His weaknesses, per Zierlein: Below-average efficiency getting through progressions…. Has trouble cutting it loose when receivers come free…. Doesn’t throw with enough anticipation against zone coverage…Lacks the arm talent and velocity to be late with throws and still connect. Ball placement goes astray when he feels pressured.”
