Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill suffers severe left knee injury vs. Jets
Tyreek Hill sustained an apparent left leg injury in the third quarter of the Miami Dolphins’ Monday night matchup against the New York Jets.
The Dolphins quickly ruled out the star receiver with a knee injury with multiple outlets saying that he dislocated it.
“Tyreek Hill has been ruled out with a knee injury,” the franchise tweeted Monday evening. “He is being taken to a local hospital for imaging, evaluation and observation.”
The star receiver had just caught a 10-yard pass when safety Malachi Moore tackled him. His leg got caught underneath him during Moore’s tackle. Hill’s leg was quickly put in an air cast, and he was carted off.
Although Hill smiled and waved as the cart took him off the field, the severity of the injury was apparent. Both teams patted the star wideout on the back after he was loaded onto the cart. The crowd erupted in cheers as he was shuttled into the locker room.
“And as you can see on the jumbotron – he was kind of joking,” Tua Tagovailoa said. “That’s just his personality. So he was joking when I came up and talked to him and when a lot of the guys came up and talked to him. That’s just his personality. That’s just who he is. But our thoughts and our prayers are with him."
Hill’s injury came amid what would’ve certainly been a noteworthy performance from the receiver. Through a little more than two quarters, Hill led all receivers with six catches for 67 yards.
Although a timeline is not known, a simple Google search offers several answers about Hill’s recovery time. Mild cases could sideline the eight-time Pro Bowler six to eight weeks while a more moderate dislocation could keep him out anywhere in between three and six months. The most severe case could up to a year.
What ultimately needs to be determined is whether Hill tore any ligaments, something that could significantly impact his recovery timeline.
With Hill likely lost for the foreseeable future, it will be up to Jaylen Waddle, Malik Washington and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine to pick up some of the slack in the receiver room. Other options include practice squad players like Theo Wease Jr. and AJ Henning or free agents with familiarity of the offense, including Odell Beckham Jr. and Robbie Chosen. The inclusion of tight end Darren Waller, who starred Monday with two touchdowns, will also likely be a big plus for the offense.
What remains to be seen is how Hill’s injury will impact his current contract. He was slated to earn $36 million in base salary and bonuses. That figure includes a $5 million bonus if he’s on the roster on March 18, 2026.
Hill, however, was likely either going to have to restructure his contract or be released this upcoming offseason. The Dolphins gain an identical amount of cap space if he were released.
