Dolphins sign kicker to 53-man roster, move rookie cornerback to injured reserve
Rookie fifth-round pick Jason Marshall Jr., who won the Dolphins’ nickel cornerback role in preseason, will miss at least four games after being placed on injured reserve on Monday.
The Dolphins needed a spot on the 53-man roster for kicker Riley Patterson, who had used up his maximum three practice-squad elevations.
Patterson, filling in for the injured Jason Sanders, has made all five of his extra point attempts and both of his field goal attempts this season (from 40 and 44 yards, against New England).
Special teams coach Craig Aukerman said last week that he wasn’t sure when Sanders would return from a hip injury. He was placed on injured reserve a few days before the regular season began.
Marshall, who sustained a hamstring injury against Buffalo, is the seventh Dolphins cornerback to be sidelined by injury over the past two months.
Marshall, Kader Kohou, Artie Burns and Jason Maitre are on injured reserve. Of those four, only Marshall is eligible to return this season.
Cam Smith is on the NFL non-football injury list and is eligible to return this season.
Cornerback Storm Duck remains on the 53-man roster but hasn’t played the past two games because of an ankle injury that will sideline him for Monday’s game against the visiting Jets (7:15 p.m., CBS-4, ESPN).
And cornerback Ethan Bonner missed time with an injury in preseason and is questionable for Monday’s game because of a hamstring injury.
Aside from Bonner, the Dolphins have only four healthy cornerbacks on the 53-man roster: Jack Jones, Rasul Douglas, JuJu Brents and Cornell Armstrong.
Teams can bring as many as eight players off injured reserve during the regular season. Dolphins players who are eligible to return include Marshall, Sanders and offensive linemen James Daniels and Austin Jackson and Andrew Meyer. Smith also would count toward the eight if he’s brought back from injured reserve.
Mike McDaniel has said that Sanders, Daniels, Jackson and Meyer are all expected to play again this season. He hasn’t addressed Smith’s situation.
Guard Liam Eichenberg, who is on the physically unable to perform list, would not count toward the eight. McDaniel said recently that his return from a leg injury is not imminent.
