Fins vs. Lions live blog: Fins win as rookie QB Quinn Ewers throws two TDs

The Miami Dolphins beat the Detroit Lions 24-17 on Saturday following two joint practices that seemingly showcased the gap between the two teams.

Dolphins rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers starred with a pair of touchdown passes to go along with 116 yards through the air and a completion percentage of 65%. His favorite target in receiver Theo Wease Jr., who recorded six receptions for 80 yards, also caught both touchdowns.

“I’ve always liked throwing to Theo since we both got here together,” Ewers said. “It just seems like we’ve always been on the same page through things, and he’s a great player. And it’s cool because we’re both from the same area down in Texas, so definitely started an early connection there that has grown into something pretty cool.”

Ewers and Wease connect again

Make that two on the day.

Ewers and Wease connected on the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter to take the 21-17 lead.

Quinn Ewers throws first touchdown

Well that should give the rookie a boost of confidence.

The rookie signal caller found his favorite target in receiver Theo Wease Jr. for the 15-yard score.

Although a muffed punt on the following drive would lead to a Lions field goal, the Dolphins remain in striking distance. Score is 17-14.

Grayson Murphy sack

The edge rusher came up big with the sack on the Lions final two minute drive of the second half.

Although the quarterback takedown put the Lions eight yards behind the line, the team still found their way to the end zone on a 18-yard touchdown catch from Isaac TeSlaa.

Lions up 14-7 at halftime.

Eskridge comes up big on second drive

Dee Eskridge came up big on the Dolphins’ scoring drive.

Not only did he snag the touchdown catch to put the Fins up 7-0 after Jason Sanders’ extra point, Eskridge caught three balls for 53 yards on the drive as a hole.

The highlight: Eskridge took a screen 27 yards on third-and-12 to put the Dolphins in the red zone.

After Eskridge fumbled his first punt return, it seems like the fifth-year receiver is extremely determined to make up for the near turnover.

Starters not expected to play

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Thursday that he didn’t expect the starters to play.

“As of right now, I’m not planning on playing the ones in the game,” McDaniel said Thursday. “This practice does participate in the overall final assessment that I’ll make with the coaching staff tomorrow but as of right now, went into this practice planning for the ones not to play.”

Expect more Zach Wilson and Quinn Ewers, the latter of whom barely got any snaps in the joint practice vs. the Lions.
