Live updates: Dolphins begin cuts to get down to 53. And Tyreek Hill update
With lots of Dolphins news expected over the next 36 hours, we’ve launched a live blog.
Please keep checking back on the top for updates:
▪ The Dolphins released cornerback Cameron Dantzler a week after signing him. Drafted by Minnesota 89th overall out of Mississippi State in 2020, Dantzler played three seasons for the Vikings, appearing in 35 games with 26 starts, producing 149 tackles, three interceptions and six tackles for loss. He was out of the league last season.
▪ The Dolphins released tight end Chris Myarick, according to a league source. That leaves Darren Waller, Julian Hill and Tanner Conner as the team’s likely tight ends, with Hayden Rucci also in the mix.
▪ The Dolphins have released veteran tight end Pharoah Brown, according to a source. Brown, a skilled run-blocker, was signed to compete for the in-line blocking role handled by Julian Hill (who remains on the team) and Durham Smythe (who signed with Chicago).
But the Dolphins decided to go younger at the position, aside from veteran Darren Waller. Brown has appeared in 87 NFL games, with 54 starts.
▪ Per a source, the Dolphins released rookie wide receiver AJ Henning, who had some good moments in camp as a receiver and returner. The Dolphins aren’t sure yet if they will have room for him on the practice squad, but he’s sticking around South Florida just in case they do.
▪ Per a source, the Dolphins are releasing cornerback Ethan Robinson, who had a game-sealing interception in the win at Detroit, according to a source. He’s a possibility for the practice squad. Robinson was an undrafted rookie signing out of Minnesota; Miami gave him $175,000 guaranteed.
▪ The Dolphins released rookie offensive lineman Addison West, according to a source. He’s a possibility for the practice squad.
▪ The Dolphins released offensive lineman Mason Brooks, a former United Football League standout signed last week to patch an injury-depleted offensive lineman.
▪ The Dolphins are doing imaging test on kicker Jason Sanders to determine the extent of the injury that sidelined him in Saturday’s preseason finale.
Coach Mike McDaniel said after the game that Sanders could have kicked points after touchdowns, if needed, and that Sanders did not seem “overly concerned” about his availability for the Sept. 7 opener at the Colts.
▪ The Dolphins released defensive lineman Ben Stille, according to a source. Stille appeared in 18 games, including one for the Dolphins in 2022.
▪ The Dolphins released offensive lineman Jackson Carman, according to a source. Last season, he played 68 offensive snaps and appeared in eight games, including a late-season start against Houston. The Dolphins used him at guard and tackle.
▪ The Dolphins released offensive lineman Jalen McKenzie, who was a long shot to stick. He’s the son of former Dolphins executive Reggie McKenzie.
▪ The Dolphins released veteran cornerback Mike Hilton, their most experienced defensive back.
Hilton joined the Dolphins three days into training camp, with the expectation that he would be their top nickel cornerback. But even though he was listed as a starter on the depth chart, he seldom practiced with the starters and his reps were limited.
By last week, rookie Jason Marshall Jr. has surpassed Hilton as the first-team nickel cornerback.
▪ Shortly after news leaked that the Dolphins cut running back Aaron Shampklin, a source conveyed that Miami also has released veteran Mike Boone. That leaves the Dolphins with only one healthy running back on their roster: Ollie Gordon II.
Boone ran 10 times for 40 yards and a touchdown in preseason.
▪ The Dolphins — who must trim their roster from 90 to 53 by 4 p.m. Tuesday — began that process by releasing running back Aaron Shampklin on Monday. He ran for 46 yards on six carries in preseason.
Miami signed Shampklin and Boone two weeks ago after a season-ending injury to Alexander Mattison and during a time that De’Von Achane was battling a calf issue. Achane hasn’t practiced in two weeks.
The Dolphins plan to add running back help on the waiver wire or via a trade.
Jaylen Wright is expected to miss weeks because of a lower-body injury, Mike McDaniel said. A further update is expected Monday afternoon.
McDaniel said he’s eager to see Achane resume practicing before the Sept. 7 opener against the Colts.
▪ Receiver Tyreek Hill, who has been battling an oblique injury for three weeks, will be ready to play when Miami plays at Indianapolis, agent Drew Rosenhaus said on his Sunday night WSVN-7 segment.
Hill is eager to practice, but the Dolphins are being cautious with him.
