Dolphins lose another player for weeks. McDaniel updates injuries, roster spots
Second-year player Andrew Meyer, who had made a strong case to win the backup center job, will be sidelined for weeks with an undisclosed injury, Mike McDaniel said Wednesday.
“He has had a great camp, really stepped up his game,” McDaniel said. “One of our top performers.”
With Liam Eichenberg still out with a leg injury, Daniel Brunskill becomes the top option for the backup center job behind Aaron Brewer. Undrafted rookie Addison West is also taking a lot of snaps.
Meyer becomes the third offensive linemen who is expected to be sidelined for an extended period. Right tackle Austin Jackson is out for weeks with a lower-body injury but is expected back for the Sept. 7 opener at Indianapolis.
In other injury news, fullback Alec Ingold remains in concussion protocol. Cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. is dealing with a lower-body issue but will practice some on Wednesday; “we have a measured approach,” McDaniel said.
McDaniel addressed other issues Wednesday:
▪ McDaniel on No. 3 offensive lineman Larry Borom, who is the top candidate to replace Jackson in the interim: “He came with a chip on his shoulder and has met and exceeded expectations.”
Borom said the Dolphins’ system is different than Chicago’s and this offensive system is a good fit for him. “We saw elements we thought we could really grow” in his game, McDaniel said.
▪ The Dolphins will practice alone Thursday in Chicago and then hold a joint practice with the Bears on Friday. “That will be good for our team,” McDaniel said of the joint session with Chicago and two with Detroit next week in Michigan.
▪ McDaniel said edge rusher Grayson Murphy, who has had a good camp after missing his rookie season with an injury, has “vision, bend, can hold the point [of attack], can do a lot of things. He’s refining when to use all of his tools. He’s progressed a lot.”
▪ On the safety competition beyond Minkah Fitzpatrick: “It’s super competitive. We have a lot of good play. I see NFL talent.”
▪ Tight end Darren Waller is moving closer to returning from the physically unable to perform list but McDaniel said activating him in the next week “is a little tricky” because it might not be best to bring him back in a joint practice.
▪ Though Mike Hilton Jr. looks to be the Dolphins’ top nickel corner, Miami also is giving a lot of work to Cornell Armstrong in that role.
“We are intentionally giving people a lot of ops to compete,” McDaniel said. “Each player will get their opportunity. Some days we are heavily repping one guy over the other.”
