Dolphins bringing in veteran tight end Fant for a free agent visit
The Dolphins, who suddenly have more than $12 million in cap space after reworking Minkah Fitzpatrick’s contract during the weekend, are hosting Noah Fant, the top remaining free agent tight end, on a visit at team headquarters.
Fant’s visit, first reported by Jordan Schultz, will be his third, following previous stops in Cincinnati and New Orleans.
Fant caught 45 passes for 500 yards and a touchdown for Seattle last season (14 games, nine starts) but was released earlier this month for reasons the Seahawks declined to explain.
He played his first three seasons in Denver and past three in Seattle and has 300 receptions for 3,305 yards (11.0 per catch) and 15 touchdowns. He has started 83 of his 95 NFL appearances.
Fant, 27, has played more than 55% of his team’s offensive snaps in each of his six seasons in the league, including 64% last season.
Denver drafted Fant 20th overall out of Iowa in 2019.
In March of 2022, Denver traded Fant to the Seattle Seahawks along with two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-round pick, quarterback Drew Lock and defensive lineman Shelby Harris in exchange for quarterback Russell Wilson.[
Fant signed a two-year, $21 million extension with Seattle in March 2024 but was released July 20.
If Fant joined the Dolphins, he instantly would be the front-runner to start, following the late-June trade of Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh.
Miami’s tight end room includes former Pro Bowler Darren Waller (who continues to work his way back after being retired for a year), Julian Hill, Tanner Conner (who has had a good camp), Hayden Rucci and Jalin Conyers, who was missing from practice on Monday.
McDaniel said Waller, who is on the physically unable to perform list and thus not practicing, has not had any setbacks as he works himself into football shape after a year away from the game.
