Dolphins draft Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers as potential backup to Tua Tagovailoa
The Miami Dolphins selected University of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers with the 231 pick in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
A three-year starter for the Texas, Ewers completed roughly 65-percent of his passes for 9,128 yards. He threw 68 touchdowns and 24 interceptions but also added eight scores on the ground.
Ewers, who’s known for his quick release, ran a similar scheme to the Dolphins in college, something that will benefit him greatly in South Florida.
“We ran a lot of stuff that Miami does,” Ewers said, explaining that the Longhorns took several plays from the Dolphins. “I’m excited to go into this facility and learn how they do it.”
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier first met Ewers during Texas’ 2023 Pro Day. Miami’s decision-makers had paid special attention to the quarterback since then, especially as Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian continued to rave about Ewers’ “mental toughness.”
“Quinn had a very good college career,” Grier said. Sarkisian “loved his competitiveness and how he plays and how his teammates respond to him,” praising his ability to push “through the injury, the expectations, the pressure with [Arch] Manning there coming in.”
Ewers started his collegiate career at Ohio State University where he came in as the No. 1 recruit in the country. Despite his decision to redshirt as a freshman, he transferred to Texas prior to the 2022 season.
During his first year at Texas, Ewers completed roughly 58-percent of his passes for 2,177 yards. He added 16 total touchdowns — one on the ground — and threw six interceptions.
Ewers began to shine in 2023 when he was All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention as his 69-percent completion ranked 10th in the entire FBS. He also threw for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. Ewers also helped Texas capture its first Big-12 title since 2009.
An 2024 likely moved landed Ewers up draft boards. Not only did his 31 passing touchdowns tie for sixth in the FBS, he threw for 3,472 yards in enroute to his second-team All-SEC selection. Ewers also tossed 12 interceptions.
Between Manning’s ascension in 2024 and his brief stint at Ohio State University, Ewers has faced his fair share of adversity. Still, the young signal-caller has embraced the hardships.
“The adversity that I’ve gone through, I don’t think many people would come out of it the way I did,” Ewers said, adding that he enjoys “going through adversity.”
With the Dolphins’ decision to sign Zach Wilson in free agency, Ewers will have to compete for the backup role.
