Dolphins reportedly finalizing deal for former Jets safety

The Miami Dolphins didn’t look too far to address the team’s safety void, targeting a former AFC East’s team’s free agent safety.

According to Fox Sports, the Dolphins are working to finalize a deal for New York Jets free agent Ashtyn Davis, who has started 22 games for the Jets over the past five seasons.

Davis, a former California standout whom the Jets selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, has contributed 175 tackles, eight interceptions, three forced fumbles and recovered another four in his five NFL seasons.

Last season Davis only started one of the 15 games he played for the Jets, contributing two interceptions and two pass breakups 261 defensive snaps.

He becomes the third safety Miami added Tuesday, the second day of the free agent negotiating period, which coincided with Miami losing Jevon Holland, a four-year starter, to the New York Giants.

The Dolphins responded to Holland’s three-year, $45.3 million contract with the Giants by agreeing to a one-year deal with former Lions safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, who reportedly will sign for $4 million, and re-signing veteran safety and special teams ace Elijah Campbell.

Davis has the most experience of the three considering he’s played 1,639 defensive snaps the past five seasons.

Davis has also played 1,055 special teams snaps, which means he’s been used as a core special teams contributor throughout his NFL career.
