Tyreek Hill surgery update, Jevon Holland + more Miami Dolphins notes from the NFL combine

The NFL Combine is officially here!

More than 300 players from schools all across the country will descend upon Indianapolis with the hope that they can improve their draft stock.

And while the prospects are the main attraction, everyone knows the best stuff comes from the coaches and general managers’ press conferences. With that said, let’s dive into what coach Mike McDaniel talked about.

Tyreek Hill surgery confirmed

The star receiver sent Dolfans into a frenzy Friday when he appeared on his Instagram story waving around a heavily bandaged left wrist. McDaniel gave a much needed update Tuesday morning.

“He had surgery on his wrist,” McDaniel said. “It was a ligament issue — it wasn’t a broken wrist. He’s scheduled to be running very soon in which he’ll rely upon that in his training until he can catch the football which will be more around summer time going into training camp.”

Terron Armstead update

Although Armstead has yet to decide whether or not he will retire, McDaniel said the Dolphins will operate “as though we’re moving on.”

“He’s going to take his time with his family and loved ones and make that decision because it’s not an easy one,” McDaniel said Tuesday morning at the NFL Combine. “But we will be operating as though we’re moving on in that way simply for the execution of free agency and the draft.”

Jevon Holland

The Dolphins’ Jan. 5 loss to the New York Jets could be the last time that Holland dons a Dolphins uniform.

A four-year starter, Holland will test the free agent waters this offseason, a move that McDaniel believes the young safety certainly has the right to do.

“Jevon has earned the right to go out and test his market,” McDaniel said. “That’s something that I don’t look at as a negative because what I don’t want is players being here and wishing they were somewhere else.”

Added McDaniel: “We feel good about his ability to test his market and if business works out appropriately, his ability to be back here.”

RB room

The Dolphins released Raheem Mostert on Feb. 14, likely a tough decision considering his otherworldly 2023 performance when he became the franchise leader for single-season touchdowns. With Mostert gone and Jeff Wilson a free agent, the Dolphins only have two running backs under contract: De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright.

While McDaniel expressed his love for both Achane and Wright, he also looked forward to the prospective of potentially adding players

“I feel extremely strong about who’s in the room knowing that it will grow by by two to three people,” McDaniel said, later adding “Our vision moving forward is we have high expectations for that tandem of Devon and Jalen and and think that they give us an opportunity to really, really be effective, handing the ball off and doing stuff in the pass game.”

Whether or not they will draft a running back for third straight year or add one via free agency remains to be seen.

“We’ll look at that position,” McDaniel said, “and quite honestly, look at every position because I don’t want to be in a situation ever — and Chris is the exact same way — where you had an opportunity to pick somebody that is elite but you didn’t put any time into it, so we will put in healthy time, just like every other position.”

Wes Welker clarity

The Dolphins made the somewhat surprising decision to part ways with receivers coach Wes Welker when the team’s 2024 season concluded.

While some believe that Welker’s inability to control Hill led to his dismissal, McDaniel disagreed with that notion.

“I could see why one could come to that conclusion, however, it wasn’t that at all,” McDaniel said, later adding “It’s very important that I outline specifically what I’m looking for on the front end with a coach and in certain situations, those those things can’t be delivered upon so who else is going to do the hard, but right thing? That’s my job. But it was motivated in things that were much Beyond w know what happened with Tyreek at the end of the season.”
