Dolphins elevate two players from practice squad, with Armstead status in question
The Dolphins elevated offensive tackle Ryan Hayes and quarterback Skylar Thompson for Sunday’s regular-season finale at the Jets (4:25 p.m., Fox).
Hayes was elevated because of the uncertainty surrounding left tackle Terron Armstead’s knee; Mike McDaniel said Armstead’s availability will be determined Sunday morning.
If Armstead can play, then Armstead would start at left tackle and Patrick Paul or Jackson Carman would start at right tackle. Both Paul and Carman likely would start if Armstead cannot play, and Hayes would be their backup, although guards Liam Eichenberg and Isaiah Wynn also can play tackle.
Armstead has missed one game and was forced to leave two other games early (including last Sunday’s Cleveland game) because of a knee injury. He practiced on a limited basis Friday after not practicing Wednesday and Thursday.
Thompson was elevated because the Dolphins need a backup quarterback behind Tyler Huntley. Tua Tagovailoa, listed as doubtful, is expected to miss Sunday’s game but said he will play in postseason if the Dolphins make it.
Calais Campbell popped up on the Dolphins’ injury report on Friday with a neck issue that has left him questionable for Sunday’s game at the Jets, but the Dolphins opted not to elevate another defensive lineman.
Receiver Tyreek Hill (wrist/illness), receiver Jaylen Waddle (knee), receiver Dee Eskridge (finger) are questionable, but Waddle said he intends to play and Hill usually plays when he’s questionable.
Safety Jevon Holland (wrist) is questionable, but the fact that Nik Needham wasn’t involved in a Saturday transaction might be a good sign regarding Holland’s availability. Jordan Poyer, Elijah Campbell and Patrick McMorris are the team’s healthy safeties.
The Dolphins will be without linebacker Anthony Walker Jr., who is out due to a knee injury.
The Dolphins would make the playoffs if they beat the Jets and Kansas City beats Denver (4:25 p.m., CBS).
