Dolphins’ Chubb to practice. And backup quarterback change and more news from McDaniel
Edge rushers Bradley Chubb and Cam Goode, who have been sidelined since knee injuries late last season, will begin practicing on Wednesday, coach Mike McDaniel said Monday.
Both players must be activated within 21 days in order in order to play this season. They can be activated any time within the 21 days.
Chubb hasn’t played since sustaining an ACL injury on Dec. 31 against Baltimore. Goode hasn’t played since injuring a patellar tendon on Jan. 7 against Buffalo.
McDaniel credited both for how they have attacked their rehabilitation.
Chubb’s return, in particular, will help a Dolphins pass rush that has produced the fourth-fewest sacks in the league. Chop Robinson, Emmanuel Ogbah, Quinton Bell and Mo Kamara are the four edge rushers on the 53-man roster. Tyus Bowser was placed on injured reserve last week with knee and elbow issues.
Other quick notes from McDaniel’s media briefing on Monday:
▪ McDaniel said Tyler Huntley will be the backup quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa this week, meaning Skylar Thompson will be the third quarterback.
Huntley came off injured reserve last Thursday after missing four games with a shoulder injury but was the third (emergency) quarterback for the Packers game, which made sense because he hadn’t practiced in a month.
Huntley, signed off Baltimore’s practice squad on Sept. 16, went 1-2 as Miami’s starter in the final three games that Tagovailoa missed due to a concussion. He had one touchdown, one interception and a 73.9 passer rating.
Thompson started the first game that Tagovailoa missed, but was ineffective in that 24-3 loss to Seattle, and sustained a chest injury in the second half of that game. When he next saw game action, he was removed after playing two snaps of mop-up duty in a win against the Patriots, after Thompson and Jaylen Wright combined on a fumble that the Patriots returned for a touchdown.
In 10 career appearances for Miami, Thompson is 1-2 in three starts, with one touchdown, three interceptions and a 72.1 passer rating. He started Miami’s 34-31 wild card loss to Buffalo in January 2023.
▪ McDaniel is “optimistic” that cornerback Kendall Fuller will play this week after missing three games with a concussion. He remains in concussion protocol.
▪ Cornerback Kader Kohou is working through back issues and it’s unclear if he will play this week, McDaniel said. But he won’t be going on injured reserve.
▪ Cornerback Cam Smith’s shoulder injury is more serious than Kohou’s back issue and he’s out this week. It’s undetermined if he will go on injured reserve.
▪ Right tackle Kendall Lamm is dealing with an elbow injury: “It’s a very painful injury; could have played longer if we asked him to. He’s a veteran that knows how to take care of his body and has a very high pain tolerance. He’s doing all right.”
