Dolphins’ McDaniel updates injuries and other issues heading into Colts game
The Dolphins are expected to get running back De’Von Achane back against Indianapolis, but safety Jevon Holland’s status remained in question on Friday morning.
Achane has practiced fully the past two days but has not yet cleared concussion protocol because “it’s based on the final stamp of a medical expert” after Friday’s practice, coach Mike McDaniel said. The team is optimistic that Achane will play Sunday.
Holland has a broken bone in his left hand and has practiced on a limited basis this week with protective covering on his hand. He has spoken of possibly playing with a club on Sunday. But McDaniel said it’s “up in the air” whether he would play against the Colts.
McDaniel said the Holland situation is “tricky” because “you’re trying to get work in without making a vulnerable situation worse.. The work has been good all week.”
McDaniel said whether Holland is able to shed blocks, while wearing a club on the injured hand, is “last on the list” of issues that need to be navigated.
The team’s other starting safety, Jordan Poyer, appears on track to play. McDaniel said he’s “very optimistic” Poyer will be available Sunday after misssing the Patriots game with a shin injury.
Marcus Maye likely would start if Holland cannot.
Outside linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah, who has a biceps injury, “is day to day,” McDaniel said. “I wouldn’t feel comfortable saying he will or won’t” play on Sunday.
Meanwhile, McDaniel declined to say if quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will practice next week, when he’s eligible to come off injured reserve. But signs are encouraging, considering he reportedly hasn’t had symptoms since his concussion on Sept. 12. There would be no known medical reason to prevent him from practicing.
McDaniel said “everything has been positive each and every day” and there has been “no negative” development with Tagovailoa.
McDaniel said there’s no question the Dolphins should have placed Tagovailoa on injured reserve because of “medical expertise,” even though it required him to sit out four games and made him ineligible for Sunday’s game at the Colts (1 p.m., Fox).
Tagovailoa has “been unbelievably diligent and a leader” in recent weeks, McDaniel said.
