“Train like you play.” Dolphins Coach Mike McDaniel shares advice from Stephen Curry

Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel apparently got some great advice from the greatest shooter ever.

McDaniel met briefly with Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry back in the offseason, the head coach said in Monday’s news conference. The two talked about the importance of practice, something that McDaniel really admired in the four-time champion.

“He’s the extreme version of everything I believe in in athletics,” McDaniel said.

It’s unclear when the interaction happened, however, McDaniel said it occurred during the Warriors’ road trip to play the Orlando Magic, the date of which was March 27. The sit down was roughly 10 minutes and though McDaniel was admittedly rattled at the fact that Curry recognized him, the Dolphins coach came away at least one nugget recently that he recently shared with the team.

“You have to train much like you play,” McDaniel said, later adding “Every time he shoots, his focus is the same — on the front of the rim — as in games.”

“It’s elite stuff but it comes back to practice and preparation for those moments,” McDaniel continued.

That practice and preparation was evident Saturday as the USA men’s basketball team captured the gold in a 98-87 win against France. Curry shined in the final game with 24 points, 12 of which came courtesy of the four threes he drained in a two-minute stretch late in the fourth quarter.
