Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill miss out on NFL AP awards

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Tyreek Hill were both nominated for NFL Associated Press awards but fell short as the league announced winners during its NFL Honors show Thursday night.

Tagovailoa, who was nominated for Comeback Player of the Year, lost out to Browns quarterback Joe Flacco, who was signed off the street in mid-November and helped lead Cleveland to the playoffs.

In the 2023 season, Tagovailoa played every game for the first time in his career after missing five games in 2022 and contemplating retirement because of a pair of stints in the concussion protocol. Tagovailoa led the NFL with a career-high 4,624 passing yards and set career-best marks for passing touchdowns (29) and completion percentage (69.3 percent). He was also voted to his first Pro Bowl.

According to AP Senior NFL writer Rob Maddi, Tagovailoa finished fifth with 21 votes and got four first-place votes.

Tagovailoa was named Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year, which is voted on by fellow players. AP awards are voted on by a panel of media members.

Hill, who was nominated for Offensive Player of the Year, lost out to San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, who accounted for 2,023 scrimmage yards and 21 touchdowns. Hill led the NFL with a career-high 1,799 receiving yards. His 13 touchdown receptions tied for the NFL lead, and his 119 receptions ranked second. Hill was voted to the Pro Bowl and was a unanimous first-team AP All-Pro selection.

According to Maaddi, Hill finished second in voting with 139 votes. McCaffrey got 222 votes. Hill also finished sixth in voting for the Most Valuable Player award, which went to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Hill was named Sporting News Offensive Player of the Year, which is also voted on by fellow players.
