Update on Dolphins assistants interviewing for other jobs. And more notes

With the Dolphins’ 2023 season over, multiple assistants are up for possible promotions with other teams.

Offensive coordinator Frank Smith on Tuesday completed a virtual interview with the Carolina Panthers for their head coaching vacancy.

The Seattle Seahawks also requested to interview Smith for their head coaching job, according to NFL Network.

Meanwhile, the New York Giants requested to interview Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile for their defensive coordinator opening.

Campanile, a Jersey native, just completed his fourth season in Miami. The 41-year-old Campanile interviewed last year to be the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator before the team ultimately hired Vic Fangio. During the 2023 season, Campanile relayed the defensive play calls on the sideline from Fangio, who called plays from the coaches’ booth.

Before joining the Dolphins, Campanile served as a college assistant for several years at Rutgers, Boston College and Michigan, where he also coached linebackers. He has never been a defensive coordinator in the NFL but spent one season as a co-defensive coordinator at Boston College, and also spent time as an offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator at Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey. Campanile was a four-year player at Rutgers from 2001 to 2004.

Achane nominated for award

Dolphins running back De’Von Achane is one of six finalists for the 2023 Pepsi Zero Sugar NFL Rookie of the Year award.

Achane, whom Miami selected in the third round with the No. 84 overall pick, tied for the most scrimmage touchdowns (11) and ranked fourth in scrimmage yards (997) among all rookies.

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs and tight end Sam LaPorta, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson and Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud were also nominated for rookie of the year honors.

The winner is selected by a fan vote.

Dolphins make another futures signing

After signing eight players from the practice squad to the reserve/future contracts, Miami on Wednesday also added another player to the roster.

The Dolphins signed wide receiver Mathew Sexton to a reserve/future contract. Sexton, who originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2021, has yet to appear in an NFL game. The 26-year-old has also spent time with the New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City Chiefs.

Sexton played in the XFL last year, catching 23 passes for 364 yards as a member of the Vegas Vipers. He played college at Eastern Michigan, where he caught 100 passes for 1,335 yards and nine touchdowns.
