Dolphins reunite with Melvin Ingram, signing pass rusher to practice squad
The Dolphins are bringing in a familiar face as linebacker depth for their stretch run, signing veteran pass rusher Melvin Ingram to the practice squad, the team announced on Thursday.
To make room for Ingram, the team released Alama Uluave from the practice squad.
Ingram, 34, spent the 2022 season in Miami and recorded six sacks, the second-most on the team. He was also named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September. But Ingram, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, has not played the season.
According to NFL transaction wire, he worked out for the Dolphins on Tuesday before agreeing to terms with the team. If he remains on the practice squad, Miami can elevate Ingram up to three times in the regular season.
The Dolphins linebacker depth has been tested in recent weeks, as outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips sustained a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 12. Inside linebacker Jerome Baker sustained an MCL injury in Week 13 and was placed on injured reserve last week. The earliest Baker will be able to return is Week 18. Practice squad linebacker Alexander Johnson, who was a candidate to be elevated to the game-day roster, also announced on Monday that he sustained a season-ending Achilles injury last week. Johnson has been placed on the practice squad/injured list.
Andrew Van Ginkel has started the last two games in place of Phillips and Duke Riley played every defensive snap in place of Baker in Miami’s 28-27 home loss to the Tennessee Titans on Monday night.
Ingram is the second veteran pass rusher to join the team in as many weeks. The Dolphins also signed Jason Pierre-Paul to the 53-man roster. He has played five defensive snaps in two games.
