Dolphins rookie RB De’Von Achane will reportedly miss time with knee injury
On Monday, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel revealed that rookie running back De’Von Achane sustained a knee injury in the team’s win against the New York Giants. And while McDaniel said the team was evaluating the severity of it, the ailment is expected to sideline Achane.
According to multiple reports, Achane is expected to miss multiple weeks with his knee injury. NFL Network said the injury is not season-ending and that Achane is “week-to-week.” ESPN reported that a stint on injured reserve, which would sideline Achane for at least the next four games, is a possibility.
When asked about Achane’s availability for the Dolphins’ Week 6 home game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, McDaniel said: “I’m not really thinking anything so much right now. He’s still in the process of getting evaluated, so it’s to be determined.”
Achane, the No. 84 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, leads the NFL in yards per carry (12.1) and ranks second with 460 rushing yards despite only carrying the ball 38 times this season. In the Dolphins’ 31-16 win against the Giants, Achane became the second player in NFL history — and the first since 1943 — to score seven touchdowns in his first four career games.
After he was a healthy scratch in the season opener, Achane has carved out a role as another dynamic player in the most explosive offense in the NFL.
“De’Von is blowing this thing out of the water right now,” fullback Alec Ingold said Monday. “It’s fun to see him grow week after week, different plays, different packages, different formations that he’s in. To take it mentally and physically, to be able to produce over and over again. So I know a lot of guys like blocking for that dude because once you get him in space and find him some grass, he’ll get going.”
While Achane’s absence would be a blow to the Dolphins, who have started 4-1 for the first time since 2003, the team could get reinforcements in the backfield. Jeff Wilson Jr., who has spent the first five games of the season on IR, is expected to return to practice this week, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told WSVN.
“That’s something that we were planning on visiting once we got the entirety of the medical evaluations that come through in the latter half of [Monday] and some [Tuesday],” McDaniel said. “Our plan is to revisit that regardless, which was our plan going into it. We’ll talk about it probably [Tuesday].”
