Commanders request to interview Dolphins assistant Darrell Bevell for OC opening
The Washington Commanders have requested to interview Dolphins assistant Darrell Bevell for their offensive coordinator opening, a league source confirmed to the Miami Herald.
Bevell held the title of quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator in his first season in Miami. He was tasked with not only helping develop Tua Tagovailoa — who had a breakout season in his third year — but navigating a position room that started all three quarterbacks on the active roster because of injuries.
Bevell, 53, had multiple stints as an offensive coordinator before joining Mike McDaniel’s staff. Players and coaches praised his vast understanding of the offense and calming voice during a series of quarterback changes.
“His demeanor, the way that he approaches the coaching of the quarterback position, I think has helped our entire room of just staying calm, cool and collected through everything that we’ve experienced this year,” said Skylar Thompson, who started three games as a rookie. “He does a great job throughout the week of just prepping us and getting us ready for the game and proposing different situations, looks that just kind of help run things through our mind to where when we get to the game, we can play fast.”
According to NFL Network, the New York Jets also plan to speak with Bevell for their offensive coordinator opening. New York head coach Robert Saleh was a defensive quality control coach in Seattle when Bevell was the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator.
During Monday’s end-of-season news conference, McDaniel said he would take some time to mull changes along the coaching staff.
“One of the things that I’ve found from my experience in the National Football League is that it’s very long,” he said. “It’s very emotional. You can lend yourself to living with regret if you make any sort of decisions emotionally. So we’re going to go through the process and you’ve got to kind of let things simmer for just really the entire coaching staff, just like you do with players, and have communication. But it’s going to take a minute and we’re just out of it.”
CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson first reported the Commanders have requested to interview Bevell.
