Miami Dolphins bringing veteran pass rusher Melvin Ingram for visit
The Dolphins aren’t done scouring the free agency landscape for potential additions.
Veteran pass rusher Melvin Ingram is visiting the team Tuesday, a league source told the Miami Herald.
Ingram, who turns 33 in two weeks, finished the 2021 season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He originally signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers in July and was traded to Kansas City in November. He finished the season with 25 tackles, two sacks and 11 quarterback hits in 15 games.
The Dolphins entered Tuesday with $19 million in cap space, according to the NFL Players Association’s salary cap report, leaving the team with ample room for a veteran addition.
According to Pro Football Reference, Ingram recorded 22 pressures in 2021. Pro Football Focus graded Ingram the No. 13 edge defender in the league and the seventh-best player against the run at his position.
A 2012 first-round pick of the then-San Diego Chargers, Ingram was voted to three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2017 to 2019. He has recorded 51 sacks during his 10-year career.
Defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, whom the team re-signed to a four-year deal, and defensive tackles Christian Wilkins and Raekwon Davis project as the team’s starters along the defensive line in 2022. Ingram could bring value as a versatile pass rusher from the edge or inside.
The Dolphins have mainly kept their defense intact this offseason, retaining every starter that finished the 2021 season, as well as several rotational contributors. The team re-signed Ogbah and defensive tackle John Jenkins, as well as linebackers Elandon Roberts, Duke Riley, Sam Eguavoen and Brennan Scarlett and safety Sheldrick Redwine.
The Dolphins also restructured cornerback Byron Jones’ contract and gave Xavien Howard a new five-year deal through the 2026 season with $50 million in new money.
The team’s sole outside signing on defense, cornerback Keion Crossen, is primarily a special teams contributor.
NFL Network first reported Ingram’s visit.
