The Dolphins have signed veteran punter Thomas Morstead, the team announced Friday, addressing one of their remaining roster holes. According to a league source, the contract is a one-year deal.

The team brought in Morstead, a 13-year veteran, for a visit Wednesday. Morstead, 36, played for the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons this past season.

A fifth-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, Morstead played his first 12 seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He famously executed the successful onside kick at the start of the second half of Super Bowl 44, a 31-17 Saints win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Morstead, a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro in 2012, averaged 47.2 yards per punt in 2021, which ranked ninth for all punters with at least 2.5 punts per game. His 18 punts downed inside the 20-yard line ranked 22nd. Pro Football Focus graded Morstead the league’s No. 6 punter in 2021.

The Dolphins opted not to re-sign Michael Palardy, who had an uneven first season in Miami. General manager Chris Grier said at last week’s league’s owners meetings that the team was looking at additions through free agency and the draft.
