Miami Dolphins re-sign John Jenkins, keeping another member of 2021 defense
The Dolphins have re-signed defensive tackle John Jenkins, the team announced Thursday, retaining another member of last season’s defense. Contract details were not disclosed.
Jenkins, 32, appeared in seven games and made two starts in 2021, totaling 16 tackles. It’s Jenkins’ second stint with the Dolphins after he spent the 2019 season with the team, appearing in all 16 games with five starts.
The re-signing of Jenkins is the latest move this offseason to keep the Dolphins defense intact under new coach Mike McDaniel. The team retained Josh Boyer as defensive coordinator and many of the last year’s defensive assistants. The Dolphins also re-signed defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, along with linebackers Duke Riley, Elandon Roberts, Sam Eguavoen and Brennan Scarlett. And the team restructured cornerback Byron Jones’ contract to free 2022 cap space and gave cornerback Xavien Howard a new five-year deal with $50 million in new money.
“It’s exciting to have the defense back,” Howard said Wednesday. “Especially going into our third year in the same defensive scheme, nothing changing — well some stuff will probably change but the main stuff that we talk about on the defensive side [doesn’t change].”
