Dolphins sign former Canadian Football League QB who could back up Tua Tagovailoa
The Dolphins on Tuesday signed quarterback Chris Streveler, a former Canadian Football League player who finished the season on the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad.
Streveler, 27, has appeared in seven games as a backup with the Arizona Cardinals during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He has completed 17 of 25 passes for 141 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Streveler, 6-foot-1 and 216 pounds, has also rushed seven times for 21 yards. Arizona waived Streveler in November 2021. He signed with the Ravens’ practice squad but did not appear in a game.
Streveler’s most extensive professional playing time has come in the CFL, where he spent two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after he was not selected in the 2018 NFL Draft.
He appeared in 23 games with 18 starts, completing 64.7 percent of his passes for 2,698 yards, 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. Streveler, who was named 2017 Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year at South Dakota, also rushed for 1,167 yards and 22 touchdowns during his time in the CFL. He was a member of the Blue Bombers’ 2019 Grey Cup championship team.
With the Dolphins expected to move forward with Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback for the 2022 season, Streveler could end up competing for the backup spot. Jacoby Brissett, who started five games in 2021, is an impending unrestricted free agent.
