Dolphins’ first-round pick in NFL Draft set after 49ers eliminated from playoffs
After watching the San Francisco 49ers creep into the NFL playoffs in the final week of the regular season and advance to the NFC Championship Game, the Dolphins now know where their 2022 first-round pick lies.
The Dolphins will pick No. 29 overall in the NFL Draft on April 28 after the Los Angeles Rams defeated the 49ers Sunday to move on to Super Bowl 56, which will be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Feb. 13.
Miami acquired San Francisco’s 2022 first-round pick in a pre-draft trade, moving back from the No. 3 slot in 2021 to No. 12. The Dolphins also received a 2022 third-rounder and the 49ers’ 2023 first-round pick. Miami would later trade the No. 12 overall pick, their original 2022 first-rounder and a 2021 fourth-rounder to the Philadelphia Eagles to move back up to No. 6 and draft wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. The Eagles will pick No. 15 overall with the pick Miami traded to them.
Recent players selected with the No. 29 overall pick include cornerback Eric Stokes, offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson and defensive end L.J. Collier.
Draft prospects who address the Dolphins’ needs and may be available at that slot include Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson, Arkansas wide receiver Treylon Burks, Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams, Central Michigan offensive tackle Bernhard Raimann and Alabama inside linebacker Christian Harris.
The 49ers being eliminated from the postseason also means the Dolphins are free to officially hire head-coaching candidate Mike McDaniel, who is reportedly set to interview for a second time early next week.
McDaniel, San Francisco’s offensive coordinator, and Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore are both reportedly scheduled to speak with the team in its second round of interviews.
