Dolphins have no injury concerns entering Monday night. Saints reportedly tried to sign Brees
The Dolphins enter Monday night’s road game against the New Orleans Saints about as healthy as they have been all season.
No player on the 53-man roster had a game status on Saturday, giving the team a clean bill of health as it prepares for a pivotal game in prime time.
It should mean the return of tight end Adam Shaheen, who has missed the last three games with a knee injury.
Five Dolphins from the active roster remain on the reserve/COVID-19 list: cornerback Justin Coleman, offensive linemen Robert Jones and Greg Mancz, tight end Cethan Carter and linebacker Duke Riley. They won’t play unless they return two negative tests before 4 p.m. Monday.
Wide receiver Lynn Bowden, who is out for the season on injured reserve, is also on the list.
For the Saints, three players are questionable: starting offensive tackle Terron Armstead (knee), starting defensive lineman Marcus Davenport (shoulder/knee) and starting wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith (shoulder).
More importantly for New Orleans, 16 players are on the reserve/COVID-19 list, most notably quarterback Taysom Hill, linebacker Demario Davis, safety Malcolm Jenkins and offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk.
Saints reportedly tried to get Brees for MNF
According to nola.com, the Saints reached out to retired quarterback Drew Brees about returning to the team amid an outbreak that not only sidelined Hill but backup Trevor Siemian.
Brees gave the idea “serious thought,” according to the report, but ultimately declined. The report said that if Brees was going to come out of retirement, he wanted to be the starter for the rest of the season. Brees also declined the offer because he “wasn’t 100% confident he would be able to make the throws necessary to successfully lead the offense.”
Rookie Ian Book will make his first career start Monday night. Brees played in New Orleans for 15 years and joined NBC’s “Football Night In America” after retiring.
The Saints also reportedly reached out to Josh McCown and Phillip Rivers, who last played with the Indianapolis Colts last season before retiring.
