The Dolphins have elevated running back Duke Johnson from the practice squad ahead of Sunday’s road game against the New York Jets.

The team signed Johnson, a Miami native and University of Miami alum, to the practice squad in late October. This is his first practice-squad elevation this season.

Johnson, 28, has started 17 NFL games and appeared in 91, averaging 4.2 yards per rush on 459 carries and scoring eight touchdowns as a runner while catching 307 passes, including 12 TDs, and averaging 9.2 yards per reception.

Johnson’s elevation could mean the Dolphins make Patrick Laird inactive Sunday. Laird was signed from the practice squad to the 53-man roster before the team’s Week 8 game against the Buffalo Bills. He’s played 33 snaps on offense and eight snaps on special teams in the last three games.

The Dolphins rank 32nd in rushing yards per game (73.6) and 30th in yards per carry (3.4).
