Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa establishes scholarship endowment at his old high school
Tua Tagovailoa is giving back to the high school that made him.
On Tuesday, the Miami Dolphins quarterback announced he’s establishing a scholarship fund to benefit Saint Louis School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tagovailoa, who graduated from Saint Louis in 2017 before going to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide, is establishing a permanent $300,000 scholarship endowment at the school, and giving out an additional four scholarships over the next four years.
“My hope is that these scholarships will give deserving Hawaiʻi students the same opportunities Saint Louis School gave me,” Tagovailoa said in a statement. “It is a blessing to honor my family and high school through this gift.”
Tagovailoa is naming each of the four scholarships in honor his four grandparents: Seumaninoa Tagovailoa, Taulia Fa’avi, Leaniva Tagovailoa and Pa’iau Fa’avi.
“On behalf of the entire Saint Louis School family, we thank Tua for his incredibly generous donation,” school president Glenn Medeiros said in a statement. “Tua Tagovailoa is a shining example of our motto, Mindful and Faithful. Mahalo nui loa, Tua; you make our community proud.”
Tagovailoa was the No. 5 overall selection by the Dolphins in the 2020 NFL Draft after a standout career at Alabama. As a freshman, the quarterback led the Crimson Tide to a national title by throwing for a touchdown in overtime of the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship. He followed it up by finishing as runner-up for the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore, then finished 10th in Heisman voting in his injury-shortened junior season.
Tagovailoa finally moved to South Florida earlier this month and began working with team medical staff Monday in Davie. He’s recovering from a devastating hip injury, which cut short his junior season in Tuscaloosa.
