Former Miami Hurricane among Dolphins’ six pre-draft cuts
The Dolphins will have some 20 new faces on their roster in a little over a week, which means several incumbent players had to go to make room.
On Saturday, they cut six, most notably ex-Miami Hurricane Gerald Willis.
Willis, a defensive tackle, spent most of 2019 on the Dolphins’ practice squad but did appear in two games late in the season.
The other Dolphins players waived Saturday: linebackers Jake Carlock and Jamal Davis II, wide receivers Andy Jones and Terry Wright and cornerback Linden Stephens.
Davis appeared in three games for the Dolphins; Carlock was a late-season practice squad addition. Jones was probably the most accomplished of the released Dolphins players. He started three games for the Lions from 2017-2018, catching a touchdown pass his rookie season.
The moves leave the Dolphins with 72 players heading into next week’s draft. They have 14 draft picks, including three in the first round, and are expected to add several more rookie free agents. The league allows teams to carry 90 active players on their roster until cutdown day, Aug. 29., when they have to get down to 53.
