Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores has a new top lieutenant, and he’s a familiar name
The Miami Dolphins on Thursday made official a couple of coaching moves long expected, and announced a handful more that had not previously been reported.
The biggest news:
Karl Dorrell, a longtime assistant who is in his second go-round with the Dolphins, is now Brian Flores’ assistant head coach. He will also still serve as the team’s wide receivers coach.
Dorrell’s group overachieved in 2019, with DeVante Parker topping 1,200 yards and undrafted rookie Preston Williams showing great promise before his season-ending knee injury.
Flores promoted Dorrell to the position he originally gave Jim Caldwell last winter, but Caldwell left the team due to illness some six months later and never returned.
Another new revelation from Thursday’s announcement: Lemuel Jeanpierre joins the team as its assistant offensive line coach after serving in the same role with the Raiders the past season. Jeanpierre spent six years with the Seahawks as a player and another as an assistant coach before moving to Miami.
Meanwhile, two hires that have long been known finally became official Thursday: Gerald Alexander as defensive backs coach and Anthony Campanile as linebackers coach.
Alexander becomes the 11th person in Dolphins history to act as both a player and a coach; he was a journeyman safety who spent parts of the 2011 season with the Dolphins, appearing two games.
Campanile, meanwhile, make the jump from the college game to the NFL. He was previously Michigan’s linebackers coach after working previously for Boston College and Rutgers.
Along with Dorrell’s promotion, Josh Grizzard will now serve as the Dolphins’ assistant wide receivers coach and Rob Leonard as assistant defensive line coach.
