Thousands of Eagles fans trudged out of Hard Rock Stadium as unhappy customers Sunday
They booed when the Dolphins took the field.
They were loud when the Eagles were on defense
And they were dead silent when the game was over.
The thousands of Eagles fans who invaded Hard Rock Stadium Sunday made a lot of sound and fury, but in the end, it signified nothing.
Final score Sunday: Dolphins 37, Eagles 31.
“That’s not the first time I’ve played against the Eagles and it’s like a home game [when] they’re away,” Dolphins safety Eric Rowe said. “We blocked the noise out. You see at the end, it got pretty quiet. Only Dolphins fans were cheering. Those were our supporters right there.”
When this game showed up on the calendar, it was a given the Eagles would have a strong presence in the stadium. A December road trip to South Florida is never a bad idea for people in the north, and with the game falling on a long holiday weekend, it was too good of an idea to pass up Sunday.
It makes sense, then, that the Dolphins had their biggest crowd (65,545) of their 2019 home schedule. In the days leading up to the game, the cheapest get-in on Stubhub was around $80. And it seems like Eagles fans bought up most of the available tickets on the secondary market.
“We just knew we just had to stick together and it was all about the guys in this locker room,” Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins said. “We had to get it done on the field. It didn’t matter about people in the crowd. It just mattered about all the guys in this locker room that was on the field.”
To be sure, there were tons of Dolphins fans in the building too. The roars were just as loud when the Dolphins did something good as they were when the Eagles had a big play.
And Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki knows that to have the full crowd support when the Dolphins are at home, the team needs to give its fans reason to come out.
“It’s all us,” Gesicki said. “We have to go out and win football games for them. You heard them at the end. When we were winning and things were going our way, the stadium started to turn. That’s a good feeling. We have a good fan base. It’s up to us to get them out here.”
