Another week, another significant Dolphins player lost to season-ending injury

Jakeem Grant’s season is over.

The Dolphins will place Grant on injured reserve Wednesday with a high ankle sprain, a source tells the Miami Herald, shutting him down with five weeks left in the season.

It’s back-to-back seasons now that Grant’s year has been prematurely ended by injury. He went on IR and missed the final six games of the 2018 season with a calf injury.

The Dolphins as expected elevated Isaiah Ford from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, Dolphins coach Brian Flores announced. And they could add another receiver if Albert Wilson (ribs) cannot play; Flores was noncommittal about Wilson’s availability Wednesday.

So a season that began with such promise — Grant signed a four-year, $19.7 million contract extension during the preseason — ends in disappointment.

He never really could get going after last year’s injury, finishing with 164 yards on 19 catches. Grant is sixth in the NFL in kickoff returns, averaging 25.1 yards per return with a touchdown.

Grant’s designation means 11 Dolphins are now on season-ending injured reserve, and that doesn’t even include the two who were designated for return, Julien Davenport and Andrew Van Ginkel. The Dolphins now have more than $43 million in lost cap space to IR to go along with some $62 million in dead cap.
