Is Harris heading trending toward a lost season? More bad news for first-rounder

Defensive end Charles Harris will miss his third consecutive game with an injured calf, Dolphins coach Adam Gase told reporters Tuesday.

That means Harris, the Dolphins’ first-round pick in 2017, will reach the midway point of the season with zero sacks and just 11 tackles, a major reason the team ranks 29th league-wide with just 11 sacks.

The Dolphins had hopes for a breakout season from Harris, but the combination off missed opportunities and missed time due to injuries has made him largely a nonfactor. Harris has just two sacks in his NFL career.

“It’s one of those injuries you have to be careful on,” Gase said of Harris’ injury.

The Dolphins should be OK at defensive end, however, with Cameron Wake and Andre Branch back from injuries and Jonathan Woodard cleared from the concussion protocol.

Meanwhile, Gase had no update on the status of injured wide receiver Albert Wilson, who had an appointment scheduled with a hip specialist Tuesday morning. Gase has said he expects Wilson’s injury to be season-ending.

Even if that is not the case, expect the Dolphins to elevate at least one of their three practice-squad receivers to the active roster for the Texans game. Gase said the decision on whether to promote Leonte Carroo, Isaiah Ford or Malcolm Lewis will be made on Wednesday.

Gase spoke with reporters via conference call ahead of the team’s flight to Houston. The Dolphins are going a day early in an attempt to change their ugly history under Gase on Thursday nights.

“Obviously, what we’ve done the last few years haven’t paid off, so we thought there was a good opportunity to change it up,” Gase said.

The Dolphins will have a walk-through in Houston on Wednesday.
