Heat bringing back ultra-popular ‘Vice Nights’ uniform this season. Details and photos
The most popular City Edition uniform in NBA history is back.
The Miami Heat announced Saturday that it’s bringing back the black “Vice Nights” uniform that it originally wore during the 2018-19 season. Center Bam Adebayo is the lone player on the Heat’s current roster who was on the 2018-19 team and already wore the uniform.
The iconic Black Vice uniform returns as the Heat’s City Edition uniform for this season, with the Heat set to sport the look for the first time this season on Wednesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Kaseya Center.
“We’re super excited about ‘Vice Nights,’” Heat executive vice president and chief marketing officer Michael McCullough said. “This was our most successful uniform campaign to date, and we are very excited to be bringing it back with some twists and turns along the way.”
The Heat’s “Vice Nights” look remains the best-selling team City Edition uniform in NBA history and the best-selling Vice uniform. Since its debut, more than 90,000 “Vice Nights” jerseys have been sold through the Miami Heat Store across 96 countries.
The Heat’s Vice campaign began with the white Vice uniform in the 2017-18 season. Then the black “Vice Nights” uniform was released early in the 2018-19 season, and that was followed by the introduction of the laser fuchsia “Sunset Vice” uniform later that same season. It continued with the blue gale” “ViceWave” uniform during the 2019-20 season and ended during the 2020-21 season with the gradient pattern of Vice colors “ViceVersa” look before being brought back in recent years.
For perspective on how popular the Heat’s Vice campaign has become, nearly half of the 570,000 total jerseys that the Heat has sold since Vice made its debut in 2018 have been part of the Vice line. The Heat has sold more than 280,000 Vice jerseys during that time, resulting in $30 million in revenue.
The Heat has also sold more than $52 million in Vice based merchandise (jerseys, shorts, shirts, hats and more), which makes up about 40 percent of its total retail revenue since 2018.
In addition, the Heat’s Vice license plate is the fourth-best seller for Florida specialty license plates.
“We want to honor the past,” McCullough added. “We’re not trying to run it back exactly as it was, but we do want to be able to add a freshness and a sheen to this most successful uniform campaign.”
While this season’s black “Vice Nights” uniform is essentially the same that was worn by the Heat during the 2018-19 season, this season’s version includes the team’s Robinhood sponsorship patch on the left shoulder of the jersey and a commemorative Vice-colored patch at the bottom of the jersey honoring the 20th anniversary of the Heat’s first championship in 2006. Both patches will be on the “Vice Nights” jersey that the players wear for games and on every “Vice Nights” jersey available for sale through retail outlets.
The Heat is also introducing a new version of the Vice court for all “Vice Nights” home games this season that features “a reimagined look of the original court design,” according to a press release issued by the team.
The new Vice court, which will be released through Heat social media channels at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, includes the “Heat” word mark at center court and a Vice-themed floral design around the court.
“We’re excited about it,” McCullough said. “This is our best performing jersey that we’ve ever had. … We do think that the patch adds a little something that helps us commemorate the 20th anniversary [of our first championship].”
The Heat is scheduled to wear the black “Vice Nights” uniform 23 times (16 at home and seven on the road) during the rest of the regular season: Wednesday vs. Cavaliers, Nov. 17 vs. New York Knicks, Nov. 19 vs. Golden State Warriors, Nov. 29 vs. Detroit Pistons, Dec. 6 vs. Sacramento Kings, Dec. 21 at Knicks, Dec. 27 vs. Indiana Pacers, Jan. 3 vs. Minnesota Timberwolves, Jan. 4 vs. New Orleans Pelicans, Jan. 15 vs. Boston Celtics, Jan. 17 vs. Oklahoma City Thunder, Feb. 8 at Washington Wizards, Feb. 21 vs. Memphis Grizzlies, Feb. 24 at Milwaukee Bucks, Feb. 28 vs. Houston Rockets, March 6 at Charlotte Hornets, March 14 vs. Orlando Magic, March 19 vs. Los Angeles Lakers, March 21 at Houston Rockets, March 30 vs. Philadelphia 76ers, April 4 vs. Wizards, April 7 at Toronto Raptors and April 10 at Wizards.
As for information on how to purchase this season’s version of the “Vice Nights” jersey, the team’s press release offered this information: “To receive early online access to a wide array of Vice Nights merchandise, fans can sign up for the Heat Insider Program. The early online access, beginning Sunday, November 9th at 11:00 a.m. ET, is available exclusively to digital Heat Store Insiders and Season Ticket Members/Premium Members. On Monday, November 10, fans at the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Miami Heat game can buy Vice Nights merchandise at all Miami Heat Store locations at Kaseya Center. General public on-sale begins Tuesday, November 11th, at 11:00 a.m. ET online at TheMiamiHeatStore.com and in all Miami Heat Store locations.”
The Heat’s ultra-successful Vice campaign initially came to an end in 2021 before the team brought back the white Vice uniform last season. This season, the Heat is bringing back the “Vice Nights” uniform.
And McCullough doesn’t rule out using more Vice uniforms in the future.
“The Vice colorway is part of our identity now. It is just part of it,” McCullough said. “The perfect example is when you look at our license plate, the Miami Heat license plate that you can buy from the state of Florida, that is in the Vice colors. So we have incorporated that into our identity. So whether it’s on a uniform or not, these colors are part of who we are. And we have the flexibility to use those now for promotional campaigns, for marketing, for whatever we want.”
