Podcast: NBA restart optimism, Tyler Herro’s hair and Heat players on ESPN all-time list

It has been a whirlwind week for the NBA’s restart prospects. After a leaguewide phone call with players Friday, pessimism reigned supreme about the possibility of the Miami Heat and the rest of the league finishing the current season. After another call Monday featuring LeBron James and some of the league’s other superstars, optimism has returned as a key group of players all hope to finish the current season.

The Heat Check podcast is feeling the optimism, too. South Florida is starting to reopen, Miami players flocked to AmericanAirlines Arena’s practice facilities Wednesday and some plans are starting to crystallize of how the NBA might be able to wrap up its season in Central Florida. David Wilson and Anthony Chiang, the Heat beat writer for the Miami Herald, talk through all the latest developments around the NBA’s hopes to start up again amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the hold-ups the league still faces to actually get back to action.

The most important takeaway, we agree, is seeing a legion of superstars all ready to get back on the court even with the coronavirus still spreading throughout the country. What are some of the sacrifices the NBA might have to make to get back on the court? What if someone like James or Giannis Antetokounmpo has to miss the NBA Finals because he catches the virus? We try to consider all the angles commissioner Adam Silver and other league executives are probably mulling these days, too, as teams return to practice facilities for individual workouts.

We wrap things up with some more lighthearted chatter about rookie wing Tyler Herro’s new — and, unfortunately, short-lived — braided hairdo, Dwyane Wade’s place on ESPN’s list of the 74 best players in NBA history and why former Heat post player Chris Bosh got snubbed from the list altogether.
