Jimmy Butler once told JJ Redick that he was mad the defense ‘put a white guy on him’

It seems Jimmy Butler took “White Man Can’t Jump” a little too seriously.

During a recent episode of The JJ Redick Podcast, Redick and Duncan Robinson were discussing how white players often have a target on their back. Redick then brought up when he matched up with then-Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Jimmy Butler.

“I guarded [Butler] on the block and he later told me that he was mad because the Sixers had put a white guy on him,” Redick said with a laugh.

“He lets me know regularly in practice if we’re ever matched up that I can’t guard him,” Robinson added.

Butler went onto to play with Redick in Philadelphia before joining Robinson and the Miami Heat in the 2019 offseason.

What’s funny is that the 76ers probably should not have put Redick on Butler. The five-time All-Star ended up dropping 38 during the game in question.

Redick and Robinson went to discuss the general disrespect white players receive, specifically on defense.

“People’s eyes just light up,” Robinson said.

The percentage of white NBA players decreased during the 2018-19 season to 18.1, according to ESPN’s Richard Lapchick.
