Podcast: Tyler Herro is the future for the Heat. Actually, he might just be the present.
Tyler Herro’s performance Sunday was one of those that makes you think again about what sort of player he might soon become for the Miami Heat — and what sort of player he already is.
The rookie wing scored 16 of the Heat’s final 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help Miami beat the Chicago Bulls, 110-105, and keep its perfect home record intact. When nothing else was working for the Heat’s offense at AmericanAirlines Arena, Jimmy Butler had a plan: throw the ball to Herro.
Herro splashed in one three-pointer with 7.1 seconds left in regulation to put Miami (17-6) ahead and get the game to overtime. He hit another one to shake off a slow start in overtime and tie the score, and he hit one final three in the last 40 seconds to win the game for the Heat. All three came on assists by Butler.
We haven’t had an episode simply gushing about Herro in a while on the Heat Check podcast, so we were due for one this week. David Wilson and Anthony Chiang, the Miami Herald’s Heat beat writer, try to put into perspective his impressive first few months in the NBA and how unusual it is to see a star veteran like Butler trust in a 19-year-old rookie so quickly.
We close by looking back at the Heat’s three-game road trip last week and debate whether its win against the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday was its best of the year. It also gave us perhaps our best glimpse yet at what Miami can be at its best when Butler, point forward Justise Winslow and post player Bam Adebayo are tormenting NBA offenses.
Can the Heat make offense work when those three are handling pretty much everything else on the defensive end? It could determine this team’s ceiling.
