The world’s top auto racers will be coming to Miami in January.
Race of Champions president Frederik Johnsson made the announcement to the small group of media gathered at Marlins Park on Tuesday.
Race of Champions is an event that pits the best drivers from the different motor sports disciplines against each other.
Kurt Busch, one of the top NASCAR drivers, and Ryan Hunter-Reay, one of the top IndyCar drivers, were on hand for the announcement. They, along with Sebastian Vettel, the 2015 Race of Champions winner, will be among the drivers to compete in this event. They are the only drivers who have been announced so far.
This will be the first time in the race’s 30-year history that it will be held in the United States.
“We always wanted to come to the U.S. and we were looking at what would be the perfect location. In the end, we picked Miami,” Johnsson said.
Unlike other motor sports events, the drivers in the Race of Champions — which features short head-to-head races — will be driving identical cars. Johnsson said that isolating this variable will definitively determine who the best driver is.
The event will take place Jan. 21-22 inside Marlins Park. Johnsson said he expects the stadium to be full both days.
“Transforming a sports stadium into a racetrack, it’s easy for people to come in here, to sit in a seat, to see everything,” he said. “It never gets boring.”
